Amazing storytelling with puppetsAnother wonderful cultural arts program brought to us by the PTO. The students enjoying learning all about the puppets and listening to this fascinating tale of Hansel and Gretel.
Exploring 120 chartsThe class is exploring patterns on the 120 chart. They are looking at how numbers change ones across but change by tens counting down and up. This will help them be able to add and subtract groups of tens. In the pictures, the students are putting together 120 chart puzzle pieces by using these patterns to know where numbers are located. It’s a lot of fun to listen to how they explain why they put puzzle pieces in certain spots.
Researchers in room 17This week the readers in room 17 studied a topic across different books with their partners. They mapped their learning through each book and collaboratively discussed their learning with their partners. Today each group had a chance to share their learning with the class. They put those maps into their writing folders. They are now ready to take their “research” and write a new teaching informational book about their topic next week.
This week we have begun revisiting both non fiction reading and informational writing. The new units are going to be so exciting as students will pick topics and will work in groups to learn more about the topics through book clubs. They will then use what they have learned to write a new teaching book about the topic demonstrating their writing crafts. This is always a fun unit and the children get very excited about it. As we began revisiting learning that we have already done on how to be a Non fiction reader, students practiced using chart mats that had NF strategies on them. They then marked them whenever they used one to help them read as a NF reader.
Light and SoundThw scientists in room 17 have completed their learning about light and sound. They worked in groups to design devices that made both light and sound to solve a posed problem. They were very inventive in their thinking and design process. They tested them and then redesigned parts they thought didn’t work and retested them. They continually reflected upon their trials. It was tons of fun!
Room 17 ScientistsWe have been investigating sound and light in science. They students are learning everything they can about how light and sound work to help devise a project to help some kids communicate across a forest to their lost group. They are truely enjoying the hands on exploring and investigating with the tools like flashlights, defractor cards, mirrors, tuning forks, rubber bands on buckets and metal water bottles.
Writers with an OpinionThe writers in room 17 have been busy writing opinions with supporting reasons. They are learning to provide strong reasons to help try to convince others that what they think of as the best, really is the best. At home, try talking with your child about the reasons why they say something is so great( which is everything at this age). They are also learning to include a talk back, which is admitting they know someone somewhere doesn’t agree with their opinion for a reason but that they still think it’s great despite the disagreement. What hard work!
As our first grade travels around the world visiting different countries to learn how they celebrate the winter holidays, we have stopped in Sweden this week to learn about St. Lucia. She is the oldest daughter in the house and serves sweet buns and hot drinks on the morning of December 13th. That is the longest day of darkness in Sweden. Here is our St. Lucia serving crumb cake to the students as they all make their own crown of evergreen and candles.
