As the first month of school is coming to a close, I would like share some of the exciting learning happening in room 17. The students and I are learning about and discussing how our brain can stretch with all new learning, and how it stretches the most when we make mistakes and have to work hard to try new strategies. This will be an ongoing discussion in our classroom this year as I am trying to teach the children about perseverance and how to be ok with making mistakes. We have read some funny books about this. Ask your children to tell about them; My Fantastic Elastic Brain, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, and The Most MAGNIFICANT thing. Another exciting piece of our learning is we have begun our math unit of addition and subtraction to 10. As the students about the fun ways we have been practicing adding over the last few days. We read the book All Animals Aboard and have been acting out stories as animals. Today the children got to make their own trains with animals like the story. These will be displayed in our hallway. I look forward to all of the fun learning we will do together this year!
It was a busy first full week. The students were participating in reading and writing workshop. They learned expectations of the workshops and we started timing for STAMINA already! The students could read independently for 15 minutes....WOW!!! The students helped to make the classroom rules and we started talking a lot about TEAM work. We are making plans before recess, so that every child goes out to recess knowing who they can play with. We have talked about including everyone, but also that these groups don't need to last all of recess. Friends can choose after a while to move onto new groups and activities. This is giving the kids a sense of security that they don't have to spend time looking for friends to play with and waste recess time. It really was an awesome week getting to know the kids better. I look forward to getting to know you better as well.
