In our first science unit, students are learning about the patterns of the moon and sun. We have begun exploring this learning through shadows. Students now know that to make a shadow you need 3 things: a light source, an object and a surface to see the shadow. They also have learned about different types of objects and the different or no shadows they make including, opaque, translucent and transparent. Here are some snapshots of the students tracing shadows on a sunny day. They traced them 3 times to watch and notice how shadows change and shift throughout the day as the position of the sun changes. Invites were sent out for our Halloween parade and fall celebration next week. The sign up can also be found through this link. Hope to see you there!
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E084DA9AB23A2F85-fall1 Thank you to all the families that came to our first family read on Friday. It was a huge success! The students loved listening to others read and getting to show off a little of their reading too.
Stuffed Animal Day!
Our class has filled the pom-pom jar!!!! We are SO excited!!!! They voted on celebrating by bringing a “stuffie” from home. Please make sure the stuffed animal can fit inside their backpacks in case of inclement weather. In room 17, our authors have been busy creating small moment books. They are adding in details to make the story come alive. They are loving the freedom to write book after book about themselves.
This morning, the students at Burr Elementary got a visit from the local Fire Department. The firefighters taught the students fire safety rules, about thier gear and how to stay safe in a fire. They walked around and let students examine their gear and protective clothing, and showed off their heat camera.
Students had fun today learning a new fact game, math checkers. This game allows students to repetitively practice their facts and allows partners to help check them.
Beginning, Middle and End. We have been exploring math stories with beginnings, middles and ends too. Students are using cubes and part, part, whole mats to help them understand the stories. The students are also using Beginning, Middle and End boxes to help them write number sentences that match the story. They are now tackling trickier stories where there is an unknown change in the middle of the story. As one student said today, " First grade math is hard!"
